The New slang and colloquial speech
dictionary is worked out by doctor of English philology of Gdansk University, Maciej Widawski who is both a real passionate and scientist and who as a few of scientists in Poland work on slang. In his dictionary one can find not only phrases or expressions from English and American streets, literature and film, but bad language which used to use ordinary so called street people and books’ and movies’ heros. In the frames of one definition real uses of the word (phrase) and its synomouses are given.
The dictionary is ‘from side to sides’ which means that its basic scheme is in English but due to Polish part of index finding English meaning of Polish word is very easy. A special value of The Dictionary is the
words material used for examples which is collected of phrases descending from generally known films and books from so called black Humphrey Bogarth’s movies to Pulp Fiction and Client, daily newspapers, songs, advertisements, popular tv shows and sayings of show business stars (especially rock stars) – in other words widely understood popculture.
The Dictionary is collected of near 10 000 English words nad phrases and near 6 000 theirs Polish interpretations so it is, rather succesfull trial of dictionarly put in order American slang and Polish as well. And even if the Author says that his Dictionary is ‘the top of iceberg’ only the material one can find in the Dictionary cannot be disdained.
Use of the Dictionary is very easy because searching words is simplified by two indexes: English and Polish, and of its composition by subject-mattered: human’s appereance and, physiological functions, love – sex, family, society – drugs, foods – drinks, transportation – motorization, school – learning, work – jobs, business – finance, criminality – violance, death – health, racialism, USA geography, computerization, music, bad language.
The Dictionary is supplemented by wide blibliography, majority in English, and by examples sources, sorted alphabetically.
