The Happy
Prince, when
he was alive, led a carefree life, but after
his death, as a
statue, he sees unhappiness
of many people. Unable to help them on his own, he
asks
The Swallow to do this. The Swallow didn’t flight to Egypt
with the
rest of his companions,
because he unhappily felt in love with the Reed, agrees
and brings poor people precious stones, plucked out from the Prince’s eyes.
Therefore, the Prince becomes blind, so the Swallow, although previously
planning to join his companions in Egypt, decides to stay with him. He
also continues to help other people, bringing them gold, taken from the statue.
Although it becomes colder and colder, the Swallow doesn’t desert the Prince,
because he loves him, and eventually he dies because of the cold. In turn, the
statue of the Happy Prince is melted, because, without gold and precious
stones, it is considered to be no longer useful. However, his heart and the Swallow’s body are brought
to heaven and their deeds are appreciated by the God.
